The place where the fine arts became a main role in the lives of the native people and the place which had presented legendary personalities to the nation form almost all fields; it is none other than Kalinga Viziangaram.
The history of Vizianagaram begins after the building of Fort by Vijayarama Gajapati 1730 as the capital of Pushapati dynasty had been shifted from Potnoor in that year. The first battle in the nation against East India company was fought at Padmanabham to save the self respect of the Pushapati dynasty and where several warriors died along with the king Vijayarama Gajapti-III. The other important dynasties are the rulers of Bobbili, Kurupam and Merangi Zamindaries.
Vizianagaram became a new district in 1979 in Andhra Pradesh with 12 towns and 34 Mandals. Vizianagaram Parliamentary constituency formed in 2009. There are several tourist spots in the district both spiritual for all religions and natural places. Sirmanotsavam ( Pydithallamma Jathara) is a memorable and the official great festival of the district. Bobbili Burra Katha is a well known ballad song narrating the story of Battle of Bobbili. Hari Katha the story about Vishnu, one among the three important gods for Hindus which sang in a separate art form was originated from here only by Adibhatla Narayandasu.
